Whether you’re the traditional type who decorates the tree and lights it on Christmas Eve, or you prefer to start in November, decorating the Christmas tree is always a magical moment and the manner in which you decide to do this reflects parts of who you are. A large part of this is deciding on which Christmas Tree decorating idea suits you. Personally, I’ve spent years deep-diving into every Christmas tree theme on the internet to make sure I chose one I truly loved and would continue to love throughout the years. As a result, I’ve been collecting ornaments since I was 15, and most of them still fit the theme I eventually chose.
Now, each year when I decorate my tree, it feels extra special; every ornament holds a memory. And I must admit: I already have a second Christmas theme planned for the future, once my first tree is filled above and beyond. As Christmas tree decorating is quite an important topic to me, I wanted to share at least five Christmas tree theme ideas that, in my opinion, look beautiful and suit different styles, homes and personalities.
Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas
Classical American Christmas Tree

I put this one first because it’s the closest to my own tree. Some might find it slightly traditional, even predictable, but that’s exactly what I love about it: it feels timeless.
For this theme, I recommend choosing a colour scheme with a maximum of three colours. Mine is red, gold and champagne. I do allow slight variations in my ornaments, though.
One rule I follow is: no traditional baubles. Every ornament must be a high-quality, shaped decoration. This is also why it takes years to build the perfect tree: these ornaments are usually more expensive.
I also add thick strands of lights and large ribbons. The key to an American Christmas tree is fullness: as little empty space as possible. So I’ll be collecting new pieces for a little while longer!
Snow and Ice Christmas Tree
This idea was inspired by my grandmother’s Christmas tree when I was growing up. She had an icy theme: delicate glass icicles, glass snowflakes, crystal garlands, and a lightly frosted tree. Her vintage lights were shaped like small candles, and it always reminded me of a winter fairytale forest.
For this theme, you could also add snowmen, polar bears or snowy cottages. As you may have guessed, this will eventually become my second tree, many years from now. I love how different it feels from my current warm-toned theme.

All-Pink Girly Christmas Tree

This theme feels perfect for someone younger, or simply for anyone who loves pink. In my mind, this is the ultimate girly Christmas tree.
You can include ornaments shaped like ballet slippers, makeup items or handbags. Or go classic and choose baubles in different shades of pink. You could also play around with patterns to make it look even more interesting.
This theme also calls for ribbons, lots of them. For lights, I’d choose elegant soft twinkle lights rather than bold, thick strands.
Teddy Beige Christmas Tree
This one is for all millennials who love a neutral-toned interior. This theme blends beautifully with beige décor, but thanks to the different shades of brown, cream and caramel, it avoids looking like the now famous “sad beige”.
For this style, play with texture: corduroy, glass, velvet, faux fur and boucle teddy ornaments will bring warmth and interest. Add plenty of lights and create depth by mixing lighter and darker tones within the same colour palette.

Scandinavian Christmas Tree

This is the most minimalistic option on the list. For a Scandinavian-inspired tree, I would focus on muted tones and natural elements.
Think paper ornaments in neutral colours, wooden details, jute or felt decorations (like the ones from brands such as Dille & Kamille), pinecones or dried citrus slices.
The key to this theme is: let the tree itself be part of the design. That means investing in a beautiful artificial tree or being extra selective if you buy a real one.
In many ways, this theme is the opposite of the American tree: airy, simple and intentionally spacious.
Merry Christmas!
Whichever theme you choose, I’m sure it will bring festive warmth into your home. Make decorating your tree a moment to enjoy: put on Christmas music, make yourself a mug of hot chocolate, and really soak in the magic of the season.
